I think this question could only be clarified by an expert..I was thinking whether porosity issue in a aluminium casted part could possibly caused by improper machining process? -- Jainal Othman, Malaysia

Answers:

  • Porosity is not caused during machining. With some Aluminium alloys requiring "ageing" it is neccessary to heat-treat the castings before machining. In the un heat-treated condition, the appearance of grain boundaries in the microstructure gives an impression of microporosity. Usually it is segregation of alloys or impurities and the 'as cast' microstructure. During heat-treatment material is homogenised which improves physical properties and machinability. PANEL EXPERT
