TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute) is a premier research institution working in the fields of energy, environment, and sustainable development. One of the focal areas of TERI’s research is directed towards developing comprehensive technological solutions for the industrial sector, eventually leading to better resource utilization and pollution reduction. Besides developing and demonstrating appropriate environment-friendly technology packages, TERI also provides technological back-up support to ensure wide-scale adoption of the demonstrated technologies.

There are specialized groups within TERI working on technologies related to small-scale and rural industries. A competence centre is developing within TERI geared to offer specialized services ranging from energy-efficiency improvement, pollution control, product quality betterment, and skill upgradation of workforce. Some of the sectors in which TERI has been actively involved since 1994 include foundry, glass, and brick-making. TERI has also developed biomass-based gasifiers for thermal applications in silk reeling, textile dyeing, and cardamom curing and power gasifiers for remotely located rural areas. These activities have been made possible with active support of the SDC (Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation).

This section highlights the work done so far by TERI in the energy-intensive foundry sector. It aims to disseminate the benefits of the efficient and cleaner technologies developed for small-scale foundry units.

Specific services provided by TERI to foundry units fall under the following two areas.
-  Reducing coke consumption through improved cupola design
- Offering pollution control system that meets the most stringent emission norms prevailing in    India.

The technologies in the foundry sector have been developed with technical assistance received from Sorane Sa, Switzerland, in energy and environment technology, and
M B Associates, UK, in foundry technology.
