The IIF has four Centres of Excellence which provide valuable services to its members in particular and the foundry industry in general: The Centre for Education and Training at Kolkata, The National Centre for Technical Services at Pune, The Foundry Informatics Centre at New Delhi and The Research and Development Centre at Hyderabad.

National Centre For Technical Services (NCTS), Pune
NCTS with its office at Pune plays a very important role in disseminating useful information pertaining to the science of foundry among the members of the Institute.

The most vital resource of NCTS is its panel of Technical experts. With a combined experience of over 400 years these experts spare their valuable time to meet the technical needs of the foundry industry. The NCTS carries out regular activities like providing:

- Information Sheets : written and reviewed by experts, they contain practical hints for practicing foundrymen.

- Technical Database : Technical articles from various Journals and magazines are collected and the data is stored for future reference.

- Video Films and CDs : Till date NCTS has produced 12 Video Cassettes and 4 CDs on Foundry related topics.

- Reply to the queries : Technical queries from members are fielded free of cost except when special expertise is required.

NCTS also conducts Workshops/Seminars on important technical subjects.

The Centre for Education and Training (CET), Kolkata
Located in IIF Centre Kolkata, CET is administered by The National Advisory Committee. It has eminent academicians and practicing engineers on its faculty.

The objectives of the CET are to:
Train the foundrymen for best utilization of human resources, educate them on the latest developments in Foundry technology, provide a forum to deliberate on techno-commercial problems and technology transfer and upgrade their skills.

Catering to these requirements, the Centre conducts short term courses and organises in-plant-training programmes using specialized audio and visual aids. Study notes in the form of monograms are prepared on topics like air pollution measurement and control, energy measurement and audit in foundries, non destructive testing, metallurgy for foundrymen, repair and reclamation technology for castings among others.

Programmes are conducted regularly in the IIF Centre as well as the various Chapters. Please see the Bulletin Board for a schedule of programmes to be held in future. The CET has prepared a database of Resource Persons, located in different parts of the country. They assist the Centre in conducting their various programmes in different locations where IIF Chapters are located.

The  CET has been conducting on a regular basis the following course for the benefit of Foundries and Foundrymen :

- Productivity in Metal Casting – Productivity, Quality Assurance, Cost of Poor Quality, etc.

- Metallurgy for  Foundrymen – Fundamentals of  Metallurgy, Metals & Alloys, Heat Treatment of  Cast –Iron & Steel, etc.

- Moulding processes and Sand Systems – Moulding Materials & their Properties, Different Moulding & Core Making Processes, Property of Moulds and Cores and their costs and the Automization in Foundry, etc.

Cupola Practice & Charge Calculations – Construction of a  Cupola, Efficient Operations, Charge Materials & their Specifications and the Charge Calculations, etc.

- Casting Defects – Causes and Remedies – Sources of Defects, Controlling Incidence of  Defects, Concept of 6 Sigma Limits and Zero Defects.

-Energy Management & Audit in Foundry – Types of  Energy, Improving Efficiency, Energy Audit, Measures to reduce Energy Wastage.

- Engineering Methoding Practice in Foundries – Elements in Methoding, Importance of Optimal Design for Manufacturability, Principles of Gating and Risering, Case Studies, etc.

- Non-Destructive Testing – Visual, DPI, USI RI, Magnetic Particle Inspection,Case Studies, etc.

- Grey Cast Iron Technology – Classifications, Metallurgy of Cast Iron, Inoculation, Desulphurisation, Gating and Risering, etc.

- Air Pollution Measurement & Control in Foundries – Source of  Pollutions, Permissible Limits, Controlling Measures, etc.

- Ductile Iron Foundry Practice – Metallurgy of DI, Inoculation and Nodularisation, Melting Practices, Gating and Risering, etc.

The programmes are normally held at  “ IIF CENTER” 335, Rajdanga Main Road, East Kolkata Township PO:  Kolkata : 700 107, each over a period of  2 days.

Registration Fees:

Research and Development Centre, Hyderabad

The IIF R & D Centre identifies the issues confronting the Indian Foundries and initiates R & D activities in collaboration with academic institutions and laboratories. Focus is on projects relevant particularly to small scale industry. Currently work has been initiated on diagonistic studies of foundries of Andhra Pradesh and Agra.

IIF members can benefit by forwarding their R & D requirements to this Centre. It organizes focussed and application oriented R & D processes in association with the Industry. Funding for issues common to many foundries is organised. In order to identify R & D areas required by the foundries, workshops are planned in Hyderabad between October-December 2001. These will be organised in association with Srinidhi Institute of Science and Technology and the IIF Hyderabad Chapter.
